History of Coffee in Nepal

 


Coffee's journey in Nepal began in the early 20th century when Colonel Gajraj Singh Thapa introduced coffee seeds from Java, Indonesia, planting them in the hills of Gulmi district. Despite initial challenges due to rugged terrain, limited infrastructure, and altitude, government support in the 1970s spurred cultivation efforts, expanding to regions like Lalitpur, Kavre, and Ilam. Nepal's emphasis on organic farming practices led to the production of high-quality Arabica beans, positioning it as a niche coffee origin. Despite challenges such as limited market access and climate change risks, Nepal's coffee industry continues to evolve, with ongoing efforts to improve quality, increase productivity, and promote sustainability.
